Solo and Small Firms Lawyer Spotlight

Hena SinghHena Singh, B.A., M.A., LL.B., is one of the founding partners of Singh Lamarche LLP, a boutique employment law and workplace investigation firm in downtown Toronto. Hena is a widely recognized employment lawyer and workplace investigator and regularly assists clients with workplace issues of all types – from the contemplation of the creation of an employment relationship, to assisting in its continuation, as well as termination. Hena is the recent author of the book A Practical Guide to Conducting Workplace Investigations. Hena is a frequent presenter on various employment law and workplace investigation topics.

We asked Hena about her background, practice and the challenges that she faces as a solo practitioner.

  1. How long have you been practicing law? How did you begin your law career?

"I began my career at a Bay Street firm after being called in 2008. After a couple of years at the Bay Street firm, I shifted gears and went to a boutique employment law firm. A couple of years after being at the boutique employment law firm, I decided it was time to go out on my own. I have had my own employment law and workplace investigation practice for eight years now, having been joined by my partner, Cédric Lamarche almost six years ago. "
  2. What has your approach been to the ‘business of law’ side of the practice?

"We started our firm Singh Lamarche LLP with the view to providing high quality employment law advice and workplace investigations to our clients. Big firm quality with small firm rates. I think we’ve accomplished our vision and are proud to say that our associates share our vision as well.."
  3. What challenges are presenting themselves and how are you handling them?

"Time management is always a perfectly unaccomplished goal. Given the nature of our practice, your day can change very quickly with one phone call. I think we do a great job at handling our competing demands without sacrificing the quality of work but it can be a challenge with how many balls we need to juggle sometimes. I work with some amazing lawyers and so when we’re working with too many balls in the air, we work together to ensure that clients needs are always met. "
  4. What is a typical day like for you? What is the best part of your job?

"There is no typical day in my world! Every day is very different depending on the files I am working on. On one day I could be out of the office conducting investigation interviews or mediations; on another day, I could be negotiating settlement packages; on another day, I could be preparing for a motion or trial; another day I could be writing an investigation report. "
  5. On a totally different note, how do you like to spend your time when you are not at work?

"I have a beautiful two year old who ensures that my time away from the office is filled with joy and laughter. When I’m not working or playing hide and seek with her, you can find me at a Raptors game, watching live comedy or attending concerts. "
