How do I create a shortcut to the Quicklaw Sign-In page on my desktop?

  1. Go to the Quicklaw Sign-In page at http://www.lexisnexis.com/ca/legal
  2. From the File menu, select Send, then Shortcut to Desktop. A shortcut should appear on your desktop.

Password
How do I store my password so that I don't have to type it in each time?
On the main Sign-In page, after entering your password, select Remember My Sign-In Information.

How do I remove my stored password? 

Once you have signed out, click the Click here if you no longer want to save your sign-in information link.

Can I use my Quicklaw password at home or in another city? 

Yes, you can use your Quicklaw password from anywhere. Billing is based on your contract and is not affected by your location.

How do I change the client identifier without disconnecting and reconnecting?

  1. At the top right-hand corner of your screen, beside Client, you should see your current client ID.
  2. Click Client ID and the client ID screen will appear.
  3. Type your new client identifier, and then click the Set button.

How do I change my password?

  • Click the Preferences link located at the top right-hand corner of your screen.
  • From the Preferences screen, click Change my security settings.
  • In the window that appears, enter your current password and create a new password. You can also update your security information at this time. Note: Passwords must consist of 6–50 characters, with at least one alphabetical character and one numeric character. Special characters (@_.-) are allowed.
  • Click the Submit button.
  • From the Preferences screen, click the Save button to complete the change in password.

How do I register for a training session?

Please contact Customer Support to obtain a training schedule or to discuss your training requirements. Alternatively, you can visit our online training schedule [link to http://www.lexisnexis.ca/support/training/quicklaw] to register for a session scheduled in one of our offices across Canada. General and customized sessions are offered free to all customers and are scheduled weekly.

We also offer web-based sessions, which provide access to Quicklaw training via the Internet — perfect for remote users and for those who cannot easily attend a session at a local LexisNexis office.

How can I find out what sources are available? 

  1. While using Quicklaw, browse the source directory by clicking the Source Directory tab.
  2. Select a button to browse by Publication Type, Area of Law, News & Business, or Industry.
  3. Filter sources by using the Country/Region, Topics, Publication Type, and Pricing drop-down lists.
    Note: Depending on your subscription, all options may not be available.
  4. Select your main area of interest from the top level, and click the category name to the right of the folder icon ( ) to navigate further down into the category.
  5. Combine sources to add to your search form by selecting checkboxes next to each source name. Searchable sources are identified by document icons ( or ). The icon indicates that a file contains a single source. The icon indicates that the file contains more than one source.
  6. Click the Browse link to the right of a source (when available) to navigate into the table of contents. Go to Browsing a Source for more information.

Searches

How do I find a case by citation? 

  1. From the Search tab, choose the General, Court Cases, or Tribunals secondary tab.
  2. On the General tab under Find a Document, select Find by Citation from the drop-down menu.
  3. On the Court Cases or Tribunals tab, enter the citation on the boxes marked Citation.
  4. Type the citation for your case (e.g., 91 D.L.R. 4th 116). Click Search.

How do I search for a case by title? 

  1. From the Search tab, choose the General, Court Cases, or Tribunals secondary tab.
  2. From the General tab, use the Find a Document drop-down menu to select Find a Case by Name.
  3. From the Court Case or Tribunals tab, enter in the name of the case under Case Name.
  4. Choose at least one word from each party's name. Note: Avoid common words (e.g., company, limited, board, Canada) and words that may be abbreviated.

Criminal Law Examples
The most efficient way to search for criminal law cases is to use only the defendant's name and to avoid common terms (e.g., Regina, R., Her Majesty, The Queen).

Example 1
Search for the 1997 Supreme Court of Canada decision R. v. Greyeyes.

Example 2
Search for the 1996 Ontario Court of Appeal decision Regina v. Smith.
As this is a common name, include some information about the topic of the case. Regina v. Smith discusses the use of multiple investigative techniques to assess impairment.

Note: Begin the search with the topic terms. This instructs Quicklaw to search for the topic terms anywhere in the document.

How do I narrow the number of search results? 

Once you have completed your search, you will see a box marked Narrow Search under the Results tab. Enter your new search terms and click Go to search within your search.

How do I set up a scheduled search to run every day? 

  1. Click the History and Alerts tab, and then click the Alerts sub-tab.
  2. Click the Legal Updates tab to access the list of your current legal updates.
  3. Click Create New Update and follow the step-by-step process to create your legal update.

Does Quicklaw remember searches I’ve conducted? 

Yes. In the History and Alerts tab, under History, you will see your recent searches and recent documents viewed.

Printing, Saving, and Emailing

How do I print, save, or email documents from Quicklaw? 

You can deliver documents from your Quicklaw search results in any of the following ways:

  • Print to an attached printer
  • Download a document to your computer or network
  • Send to up to three email recipients (including yourself)

To deliver your documents:

  1. Submit your search request.
  2. Review the documents in your search results. Check one or more checkboxes to choose which documents you want to deliver. Note: If your search results return only one document, the checkboxes will not appear.
  3. In the upper right-hand corner of any browse or results page, click the icon for the delivery method you want to use: Print, Download, or Email. Or, you may wish to view a document in PDF or in Print Preview mode.
  4. Complete the form that appears, and then submit your delivery request. Click the Help ( ) icon on the form that appears for more infrmation about completing it.

Note: Downloading and emailing are subject to terms and conditions.

Print Delivery

While using Quicklaw, use your browser’s Print function to print your documents:

  1. Click the Print icon ( ) from any search results page to specify the documents you want to print and the results format.
  2. Specify whether you want a cover page and end page.
  3. Click the Print button on the Print form.
  4. Follow the directions in the displayed window to print the document to your attached printer.

Note: Your Microsoft® Internet Explorer browser might be configured to open your file in Internet Explorer instead of in the appropriate Microsoft® Office program. To configure your browser to open Office files appropriately, click here

Print Preview

If you would like to view, print, or save (download) only a document’s text, and not the navigation bars, graphics, or options shown on the screen, click the Print Preview button on the Print form. The page redisplays, containing only text.

  • To print the text-only page, use your browser's Print function.
  • To save (download) the text-only page, use your browser’s Save or Save As function.
  • To copy the text-only page, use your browser’s Select All function (normally under the Edit menu), select Copy, and then paste the text into a new or existing word processing document.

Note: If Windows® XP Service Pack 2 is installed on your PC, you may need to follow some configuration steps in order to use the print preview feature.

To exit the Print Preview feature and return to the previous screen, click your browser's Back button, or click the Close Window link at the bottom of the screen.

Download Delivery

While using Quicklaw, you may download documents in your search results and save them for viewing in a word processor.

  1. Click the Download icon ( ) on any search results page to specify the documents you want to deliver and the format in which you want to download them.
  2. Specify any of several download options, including font choices, use of bold, italics, and underlining; page breaks; and more.
  3. Click the Download button on the Download form.

Note: Your Microsoft® Internet Explorer browser might be configured to open your file in Internet Explorer instead of in the appropriate Microsoft® Office program. To configure your browser to open Office files appropriately, click here.

Email Delivery

While using Quicklaw, you may email documents in your search results to yourself or to others.

  1. Click the Email icon ( ) on any search results page to specify the documents you want to email and the results format.
  2. Enter up to three email addresses (separate addresses with commas or spaces).
  3. Add a brief note to the email message.
  4. Specify whether you want a cover page and end page.
  5. Click the Send button on the Email form.

Note: Check with your System Administrator if you have problems receiving email messages from Quicklaw.

Billing

How do I check billing information on Quicklaw? 

If your password has been authorized to access PowerInvoiceTM, you can check billing information by clicking the PowerInvoice link at the bottom of the screen when signed on to Quicklaw. PowerInvoice contains detailed information for the past six months including the current month. To determine whether your password has been authorized to access PowerInvoice, or to request access, please contact Customer Support
