He counsels clients with respect to sophisticated business structures and transactions, including the acquisition and sale of businesses, reorganizations, estate freezes and trust and estate planning. Axel is also an expert on immigration and relocation planning for high net-worth families, businesses and their executives engaged in cross-border trade and investments.

Axel is also an expert on immigration and relocation planning for high net-worth families, businesses and their executives engaged in cross-border trade and investments.

He provides "general counsel" and "home family office" type of advice regarding wealth management, inter-generational wealth transfers, succession planning, trustee mandates, investments, venture capital and philanthropic initiatives (including establishing charities and charitable foundations).

He has acted for clients in a wide range of matters, including global trust companies in multi-billion dollar trust roll-overs/reorganizations, providing indenture trustee and trust governance advice and representing Canada's largest private equity funds on private placements and cross-border investments.

Axel has been an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School teachingLegal Drafting and has taught the experiential-based course, The Introduction to the Practice of Transactional Law at Tulane Law School (recognized as one of the top 20 innovative law schools in the U.S. by National Jurist Magazine).

Prior to joining Cumming & Partners, Axel was a Partner in the Toronto Office of a leading U.S. law firm (where he held, among other mandates, the Chair of the Continuing Professional Development Committee (Toronto)), General Counsel with an international Venture Capital/Private Equity and Hedge Fund Group and an Associate with a leading Canadian business law firm, now part of the world's largest law firm.

Axel has been a Director on the board of the Swedish-Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Chairman of the Swedish School in Toronto. He is fluent in Swedish and is involved in the Swedish Business community in Canada.

  • Counsel to Canada's leading private equity fund and publicly-listed parent in closing financing facilities for and acquisitions of distressed companies across North America.
  • Counsel to Asian-based business conglomerate and high-net worth family in its acquisition of over 120 quick-serve restaurants across Canada from world's largest restaurant operator.
  • Acted for family trusts and high net-worth families in acquisitions of multi-million dollar jet aircraft.
  • Acted for Canada's largest non-bank commercial mortgage investment fund in acquisition of shopping mall interests in Ontario.
