Hartley had been involved in major sales and acquisitions of private corporations, complex shareholders agreements and corporate reorganizations. He regularly advised many boards of directors of business and non-profit corporations on due diligence matters, how to fulfill their responsibilities as directors, how to prepare for and conduct meetings of directors, shareholders and members, and how to deal with issues that may arise at these meetings. He had also been retained as an expert witness in several corporate and commercial cases.
Hartley is one of the preeminent lawyers for governance issues in Canada and has served as Secretary and Corporate Counsel to numerous corporations and charitable and non-profit associations. He has also been a director of numerous charitable boards and of various committees thereof. Hartley has also been retained to Chair board meetings and meetings of shareholders and members.
Hartley served as Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of the High Court following admission to the Bar, achieved his LL.M. with distinction at University College, London, was appointed as Queen's Counsel in 1982, and was admitted to the Bar of Hong Kong (as a foreign lawyer) in 1994.
Hartley has a practical approach to the law and is always looking at ways to simplify his clients' issues. His vast understanding of business enables him to take on a very pragmatic approach.
Away from the office, Hartley is often found lecturing and writing on Sherlock Holmes. He co-authored Investigating Sherlock Holmes in 2015 with Clifford S. Goldfarb, and authored Who was Jack the Ripper? in 2011. When he is not coaching or playing baseball, Hartley enjoys reading and travelling with his family.
