Jim was called to the Bar in 1983 after graduating from Queen's University Law School. He returned to his Queen's roots, in 2008, when he started teaching "Personal Injury Advocacy", a course that he designed. The students at Queen's law have twice given Jim the Teaching Award of Excellence.

Jim has been inducted as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America and the American College of Trial Lawyers.
